What Sets The Naked Grief Apart
Meta Description: Discover what makes The Naked Grief different in the grief support space. From comprehensive education to lived experience, learn why our approach to grief coaching stands apart while honoring all who serve this sacred calling.
A Deep Respect for All Who Answer This Sacred Calling
Before I share what sets The Naked Grief apart, I want to acknowledge something important: I have profound admiration for anyone working as grief coaches, counselors, and death doulas. Whether you came to this sacred calling through formal education or through the crucible of your own life experiences, you deserve recognition for your passion and compassion in helping others navigate their darkest moments.
This field attracts the most courageous hearts – those willing to sit in the darkness with others, to hold space for pain, and to guide people toward healing. That takes extraordinary strength, and I honor every single person who has chosen to serve in this way.
My Journey: Education Before Experience
What makes my path unique is that grief and loss became part of my formal education long before they became my lived experience. Since 2013, I've been studying mental health, grief, bereavement, and life coaching – not because I had to, but because I was called to understand the depths of human suffering and resilience.
My Educational Foundation:
Master's in Mental Health & Wellness with over 20 hours specifically focused on grief and bereavement
Post-graduate Life Coaching Certification
Death Doula Certification
42+ credit hours of specialized training in mental health, grief, and life coaching
I was studying grief theory, attachment styles, and bereavement processes years before Scott's brain aneurysm in 2018. I was learning about complicated grief and secondary losses before I experienced the devastating loss of Travis in 2024. This wasn't just academic interest – it was preparation for a calling I didn't yet fully understand.
The Comprehensive Grief Expertise Platform
While many grief coaches focus on one specific type of loss – and do beautiful, important work in their specialties – The Naked Grief operates as a comprehensive grief expertise platform.
What This Means:
All Types of Loss: Not just death, but divorce, job loss, empty nest, retirement, health diagnoses, friendship endings, and any significant life transition
Specialized Team Approach: Karen for complex and compounded grief, Melissa Bishop for spiritual healing and mediumship
Seamless Care: Clients don't get lost between providers – we work together under one roof
Root Cause Focus: We don't just help you cope; we help you uncover the deeper patterns and find lasting healing
Breaking Death Denial Before Crisis Hits
One of my deepest passions is death education – getting our global community more comfortable talking about death and dying BEFORE it becomes part of their lives. COVID showed us how devastating isolation can be and how much we need strong support systems when grief hits.
Most grief support happens after loss occurs. I'm working to break cultural death denial stigma so that when loss inevitably touches someone's life, they already have frameworks for understanding, community for support, and tools for healing.
The Power of Lived Experience Plus Education
What sets my approach apart is the combination of extensive formal education with profound lived experience:
My Personal Grief Journey:
Loss of my husband Scott after his brain aneurysm (2018)
Loss of my father to brain and lung cancer (2022)
Loss of my "Chapter 2" love Travis (March 2024)
Multiple secondary losses including friendships and support systems
Complex grief involving betrayal, guilt, and the fear of loving again
This isn't just academic knowledge – it's wisdom earned through walking the path myself while having the educational foundation to understand what was happening to me psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Creative Approaches to Ancient Pain
My background allows me to bring creative methodologies to grief work:
Innovative Approaches:
Grief Companions Series: Hope the Ladybug, Love the Dragonfly, Faith the Butterfly
The Ten Dwarfs of Grief: A fresh perspective on grief stages
Grief Garden Concept: Growing beauty from the soil of loss
The Grief Garden Companions: A fresh perspective on grief stages
Death Preparation Education: Building resilience before crisis
Why This Matters for Your Healing
When you work with The Naked Grief, you're not just getting someone who's "been there" – though I have. You're not just getting someone with formal training – though I have that too. You're getting someone who studied this field for years before living it, who can hold both the clinical understanding and the raw human experience.
This means:
Deeper Insight: I understand both the theory and the reality
Comprehensive Support: We address all aspects of your grief journey
Authentic Connection: I speak from both education and experience
Innovative Solutions: Creative approaches backed by solid training

Honoring All Paths to This Sacred Work
Whether you're drawn to work with someone who found their calling through personal loss, someone with extensive formal training, or someone like me who combines both, what matters most is finding the right fit for your unique journey.
Every grief coach, counselor, and death doula brings something valuable to this field. Some bring the raw authenticity of lived experience. Others bring clinical expertise. Some bring spiritual gifts. I'm grateful to bring a combination of formal education, lived experience, and creative approaches to this sacred calling.
